The Duke of Cambridge’s 2020 Engagement Count

2020 (185)

I‘ve been keeping a tally on the amount of engagements that appear in the Court Circular, the official record of The British Royal Family’s work, for The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge for 1 year.

You can visit “Engagement Count” main page by clicking here.

I should again emphasise that the engagement numbers should not be converted into a “league table” of individual royal performance. These numbers are mainly only for me to compare as the years go on and they are in no way a measure of all the work the royals do. Court Circular only shares a small part of the work of the Royals, but they actually do much more than that.

All engagements differ as to time and content and there is also the time taken in preparation, whether it be a visit, investiture or speech. Except for Christmas Day and Easter Day, the Queen never has a day off from the official red boxes that pursue her everywhere. The most recent example of this is Prince William’s surprise visits to The Passage’s homeless shelter on 3 separate occasions before Christmas, which was recently announced by the charity.

Like all of us, Coronavirus has affected all members of the royal family and the number of engagements they have carried out.

Despite the Coronavirus outbreak, The Duke of Cambridge had a good year in 2020 for his engagement numbers, according to my numbers. According to my numbers, he reached his third highest total in his 9 years of marriage with 185 engagement. According to Tim O’Donovan’s count, William ranks 4th among the royal family in 2020 with 153 engagements.

As I only have engagement counts for 2019 and 2020 for now, I will compare these two years in my article, but I will include Tim O’Donovan’s counts for older data. Also, as I don’t keep tally of the engagements of other royals, I will also use Tim’s numbers when comparing The Duke of Cambridge to other royals. Let’s get to the breakdowns!

Counting engagements in the Court Circular isn’t an exact science. As always, counting and categorizing engagement numbers is subjective and each person counts and categorizes them differently. Many bloggers keep count but everyone does it differently and their own way.

Tim O’Donovan from The Times who has been counting engagements for decades, gives us the most reliable numbers every year but my numbers almost never match Tim O’Donovan’s numbers from The Times.

For 2020, I counted that The Duke undertook 185 engagements at home and abroad (Ireland). He was 35 engagements short of beating his all-time record total of 220 in 2019 and 2018.

As I said in the intro, Coronavirus, like all of us, has affected all royal family members and theyhave had very few engagements compared to previous years, but despite this, they did everything a Royal Family should do during the outbreak and made the public feel that they were with them.

According to Tim O’Donnovan from The Times, Prince of Wales, again, tops the BRF totals with 271 (17.9% of the BRF total) for the year, followed by Princess Royal with 233 (15.4%). Countess of Wessex followed with 154 (10.2%) engagements, while The Duke of Cambridge ranked 4th with 153 (10.1%) engagements. Although The Queen was 94 years old and was in the risky group due to the virus, she ranked 5th with 133 engagements. The British Royal Family had a total of 1,510 engagements for the year.

The Duke of Cambridge’s Engagement Numbers Breakdown

According to Tim O’Donnovan, The Duke of Cambridge was ranked 4th (out of 12) with 153 engagements (10.1%). As I said in the intro, this is William’s third highest year, the highest being 2018 and 2019 when he did 220 engagements. It’s great that he reached such a number despite the pandemic.

I’m including some of William’s numbers from previous years, according to Tim O’Donnovan’s engagement counts, for your comparison to 2020.

According to my numbers, William did 174 engagements in the UK, and 12 engagements abroad during her and William’s Ireland visit. William had appearances on 106 different days, with a total of 120 solo engagements – giving him a 67% solo engagement rate.

William’’s busiest months was June with 25 engagements – because of a bunch of Royal Foundation meetings. Second busiest months was January with 22 engagements – again because of loads of the Royal Foundation meetings and Reception at Buckingham Palace to mark the UK-Africa Investment Summit – and third was March with 21 engagements – because of the Royal Visit Ireland and a bunch of Royal Foundation meetings..

Note: Some engagements (ex. William’s engagements on February 5, April 30 etc.) were on behalf of two patronages, which is why the total from the table and the graph is higher than 83. While the engagements count for two different patronages, they still only count as one engagement for the total engagement count, hence the difference in total.

Conclusion

I mentioned the low numbers in my blog post where I reviewed The Duke of Cambridge’s engagements in 2019, but I’ll not mention this because the Royal Family has been affected like all of us because of the virus around us. Despite this difficult year, The Duke continued to stand by the public and support key workers, along with other royal family members, and he and Catherine used all their means to help.

Royal Visit Ireland; ‘Football, Prince William and Our Mental Health’ documentary; ‘Prince William: A Planet for Us All’ documentary, creation of ‘Our Frontline’ with Catherine for frontline workers; redirection staff to Government to help with Coronavirus; donation of £1.8m from their foundation to 10 charities; private donation to NHS charities of which he and Catherine are now Patron; supporting the Government’s ‘Every Mind Matters’ campaign; Royal Train Tour; privately visit to The Passage’s homeless shelter on three separate occasions before Christmas, where he helped pack food and spoke to homeless residents… These are just a few things William has done this year and I can say that he did a great job this year, considering that not all the background work of big projects was published in the Court Circular.

In my blog post about 2019 Engagements, I mentioned that I’ll explain my opinions about ‘New Firm’ plans for 8 senior royals in my 2020 Engagement Counts post, and now is the time!

The ‘New Firm’ (The Queen, Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Princess Royal, Earl and Countess of Wessex) were pictured together as a group for the first time, as they paid tribute to the nation’s coronavirus heroes at the end of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s whistle stop royal train tour of Britain.

The Duke of Edinburgh wasn’t present as he continues to enjoy his retirement after stepping back from his role in 2017.

A royal source said: “The family are united in exploring the possibilities in working with each other to highlight the causes dear to their hearts, helping each other and the country at the same time.

“They are working on opportunities for next year and beyond already. As soon as they are able it will be all hands on deck to make up for lost time.

“The Queen has often said they ‘need to be seen to be believed’ – this is coming from the very top.”

Prince Charles has been known to hold this view for years and it was no surprise to me. I think it’s a great and innovative idea and therefore I will always support it but we have to remember that this means more workload for 8 senior Royals. I will explain it with a little math. 10 people can easily finish 10 jobs, but if 1 person tries to do all the jobs alone, it may be difficult. So 8 senior Royals need to make sure they can do this and give all their strength to it.

We can see that the 8 senior Royals are working together in front of the camera more than before in 2020 compared to previous years. I think this is just the beginning because I’m sure we will see more joint engagements with the Queen-Camilla, Charles-William, Catherine-Sophie in 2021!
