The Duke of Cambridge Pays Tribute to His Grandfather and Releases a Photograph of Prince Philip and George

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have paid tribute to Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, who died last week at the age of 99, by releasing an image from their personal photo album.

The photograph shows the Duke of Edinburgh sitting in a carriage alongside a young Prince George.

The image was snapped by the Duchess of Cambridge in Norfolk in 2015.

Prince Philip was a keen carriage driver, a hobby he kept up right until his final years.

On the release of the image, Prince William said: “I will never take for granted the special memories my children will always have of their great-grandpa coming to collect them in his carriage and seeing for themselves his infectious sense of adventure as well as his mischievous sense of humour!”

Prince William said that his grandfather was an “extraordinary man and part of an extraordinary generation.”

He added: “I will miss my Grandpa, but I know he would want us to get on with the job.

The Duke of Cambridge’s tribute to Prince Philip in full:

“My grandfather’s century of life was defined by service – to his country and Commonwealth, to his wife and Queen, and to our family.

I feel lucky to have not just had his example to guide me, but his enduring presence well into my own adult life – both through good times and the hardest days. I will always be grateful that my wife had so many years to get to know my grandfather and for the kindness he showed her. I will never take for granted the special memories my children will always have of their great-grandpa coming to collect them in his carriage and seeing for themselves his infectious sense of adventure as well as his mischievous sense of humour.

“My grandfather was an extraordinary man and part of an extraordinary generation. Catherine and I will continue to do what he would have wanted and will support The Queen in the years ahead. I will miss my Grandpa, but I know he would want us to get on with the job.”

Prince Philip died peacefully last Friday at the age of 99 after a period of ill health.

There was clearly a lot of fun

He walked next to them on the hardest public day of their lives, in the public procession behind their mother’s coffin. And now the brothers pay tribute in their own style, with tenderness and with love.

Harry, you may have noticed, now lives in California. His message is more informal, with memories of family outings, the back and forth of conversation, of a grandfather never short of a quip or an impatient snort.

William writes as a grandson who has lost a guide and support; but also as a father who saw the mutual delight of grandfather and son together.

Both men flesh out in the few words they write the man they, and the nation, have said farewell to. There was clearly a lot of laughter. There was clearly a lot of fun.
