Princess Beatrice Expecting Her First Child in Autumn

Princess Beatrice and her husband, Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, are expecting their first baby in the autumn of 2021, Buckingham Palace has announced.

The news has brought joy to the monarch and the royal family who are mourning the loss of the Duke of Edinburgh who died last month.

The palace said: “Her Royal Highness Princess Beatrice and Mr Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi are very pleased to announce that they are expecting a baby in autumn of this year.

“The Queen has been informed and both families are delighted with the news.”

The announcement comes as the Royal Family mourn the death of the Duke of Edinburgh, who died last month. The baby will be eleventh in line to the throne at the time of their birth. The princess herself will move from 9th to 10th in line following the arrival of Prince Harry and Meghan’s second child.

Beatrice’s baby will be a second grandchild for the Duke of York and Sarah, Duchess of York and a cousin for August Brooksbank, the son of Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank, who was born in February 2021. The new arrival will also be a twelfth great grandchild for the Queen and the fourth she will welcome this year following the arrival of Prince Harry and Meghan’s second child in the summer.

The Queen’s great-grandchildren currently are: Savannah and Isla Phillips; Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis of Cambridge; Mia, Lena and Lucas Tindall; Archie Mountbatten-Windsor; and August Brooksbank.

The Cambridge children call their great-grandmother Gan-Gan, and the Queen always leaves a small gift in her great-grandchildren’s rooms whenever they come to stay.

When she was introduced to Prince George soon after he was born in 2013, it was the first time in almost 120 years that a reigning monarch had meet a future king three generations ahead.

Only grandchildren of the monarch through the male line are automatically entitled to the styling of HRH. This means he or she will be plain Master or Miss Mapelli Mozzi.

The Queen could bestow a title on her great-grandchild if desired, but it is unlikely to be asked for.

Edoardo, who is 37, has a two-year-old son named Christopher Woolf from a previous relationship with Dara Huang, an American designer, and the princess has often spoken of her happiness at being stepmother to Wolfie. She is the only second senior royal to become a step-mum in modern history following Camilla Parker-Bowles’ marriage to Prince Charles.

Princess Beatrice, 32, married Edoardo in a secret lockdown wedding in Windsor on July 17th 2020, with the Queen, Prince Philip, Sarah Ferguson, Prince Andrew and Princess Eugenie among the small group of guests.

The couple’s original wedding had to be scrapped due to lockdown, however they opted to have a secret ceremony behind closed doors as soon as government restrictions allowed. The royal family shared a number of photos from the special day at the time.

Her father the Duke of York walked her down the aisle and hosted a reception at his home The Royal Lodge, Windsor.

Edoardo’s toddler son Wolfie was best man and pageboy.

Beatrice, who is ninth in line to the throne, borrowed one of the Queen’s dresses for the special day, which she teamed with a stunning diamond tiara.

Beatrice’s wedding dress was a gown the Queen has worn a number of times over the years – including the the premier of the Lawrence of Arabia film in 1962.

It was made from ivory peau de soie taffeta with a skirt trim of duchesse satin.

It was designed by Sir Norman Hartnell who was also behind the Queen’s wedding dress and the outfit for her Coronation in 1953.

The vintage dress had organza sleeves – which were added for the wedding – geometric bodice and diamanté adornments.

The couple had announced their engagement in September 2019, with photos taken by Princess Eugenie.

Beatrice and Edoardo got engaged while away on holiday in Italy after less than a year together.

They began dating in autumn 2018 but had been friends.

Announcing their engagement at the time the couple said: “We are extremely happy to be able to share the news of our recent engagement.

“We are both so excited to be embarking on this life adventure together and can’t wait to be married.

“We share so many similar interests and values and we know this will stand us in great stead for the years ahead, full of love and happiness.”

Princess Beatrice of York is the elder daughter of Prince Andrew, Duke of York and Sarah, Duchess of York.

Princess Beatrice’s younger sister Princess Eugenie, to whom she is incredibly close, welcomed a baby boy, August, in February – August Philip Hawke Brooksbank.

The sisters will be delighted to have their children so close together in age, and to share the experience of being first-time mothers.

Their cousin Zara Tindall welcomed her third child, son Lucas, in March, while Prince Harry, also their cousin, and his wife will welcome a daughter in the next few months.

The Royal Family, like the rest of the nation, has been separated from one another in lockdown during the Covid-19 crisis. But Princess Beatrice will be hoping for a more strightforward delivery than her cousin Zara, who gave birth to Lucas at home on the bathroom floor after she was unable to make it to hospital in time.

In 2011, Beatrice hit the headlines with the unusual “pretzel” hat which she wore to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s wedding.

It was likened to everything from a toilet seat to a cat flap and Facebook pages sprung up in its honour, attracting thousands of followers.

But she took it in good humour and auctioned the headwear on eBay for charity, raising more than £81,000 for good causes.

In 2016, Beatrice split from her long-term partner Dave Clark after 10 years together.

Beatrice is not a full-time working royal and is vice president of partnerships and strategy at Afiniti, an artificial intelligence software firm.

She has a number of royal patronages including the Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice, the Teenage Cancer Trust and the Helen Arkell Dyslexia Centre.

She was last seen in public at the funeral of her grandfather, Prince Philip, on April 17 wearing a mask and belted black coat, as the royals gathered for an intimate ceremony under pandemic restrictions. Her husband, known as Edo, is a millionaire property tycoon and the son of former Olympic skier Count Alessandro Mapelli Mozzi and Nikki Williams-Ellis. Edo’s stepfather was the late Christopher Shale, a senior Tory and close friend of former prime minister David Cameron.

Update (20th May, 2021 – 10:50 pm):

Princess Eugenie shared two unseen photos of her sister Princess Beatrice and her husband Mr Mapelli Mozzi to sent her older sister an adorable public congratulations after Princess Beatrice announced her pregnancy this week.

On her official Instagram account, Eugenie, who gave birth earlier this year to son August Brooksbank, wrote: “It’s World Bee Day!! A day to celebrate nature’s most badass little friend with their black and yellow stripes.

“But our furry little friends have to share today with my big sis Bea who’s got a little one on the way.

“Beabea and Edo huge congratulations on your news – can’t wait to meet the little one.”

The expectant father replied to his sister-in-law’s post with: “Thank you. So thrilled our little family is growing,” and a heart emoji.

This isn’t the first time Princess Eugenie has taken to Instagram to fondly share photos of her sister. Last year for Princess Beatrice’s birthday, she shared a photo taken the night before her 17 July 2020 wedding with a caption and a bee emoji.

To mark her sister’s wedding, Princess Eugenie wrote, again with bee emojis: “Couldn’t Bea happier (get it)…

“What a complete joy and privilege to watch you, my beautiful big sister, walk down the aisle to dear Edo. I am so proud of you and I’m so excited to support you in the next chapter of your life. We are going to have so much fun together.

“Happy wedding day to you both.”

World Bee Day, the cause Princess Eugenie piggybacked upon, was created by the United Nations to “strengthen measures aimed at protecting bees and other pollinators, which would significantly contribute to solving problems related to the global food supply and eliminate hunger in developing countries.”
